3 Eagles defenders injured in second half against Rams

· · 2 min read

The Eagles can’t catch a break, and in the first drive out of halftime on Sunday against the Rams, CB Quinyon Mitchell slowly left the field on the way to the medical tent. He was listed as questionable to return due to a knee injury shortly afterward. Mitchell’s injury was followed by edge rusher Jonathan Greenard going down and eventually heading into the locker room, all while CB Cooper DeJean was also sidelined and evaluated in the medical tent.

Mitchell had been having a great game, and did really solid in man-to-man against Devante Adams — with the two jawing enough that it started to escalate a bit. Still, Mitchell has proven time and again to be every bit the All Pro he was named last season, and anytime he’s off the field, the secondary is worse for it.

Greenard is in his second game back from a pec injury that kept him out of training camp and the first two games of the season. He was on a snap count in his debut against the Bears, but DC Vic Fangio expected him to be up to 30 snaps or so this week against the Rams. The defense struggled the first three games of the season, but Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith did a great job as they waited for Greenard to be able to join them on the field. Those two will pick up the load as we wait hear if Greenard could miss time.

Thankfully, DeJean was able to return to the game on the next drive, but it’s still concerning that multiple players from the same position group were injured within one quarter of Sunday’s game.

Hopefully, the other guys are able to step up and continue the forward momentum the Eagles defense built in the first half against the Rams — especially because Philly’s offense doesn’t seem capable of keeping a lead on their own.
