25 Years Later, Johnny Depp's Only Comic Book Movie Is Being Removed From Free Streaming

· · 4 min read

Twenty-five years after its theatrical release, Johnny Depp‘s only comic book movie is disappearing from a free streaming service – and it’s one of his most distinct movies to date. Despite a career spanning fantasy franchises, gothic horror, and blockbuster adventures, Depp has remarkably few comic-book adaptations to his name. Interestingly, however, his sole entry in the genre isn’t even a superhero movie.

Johnny Depp has played a pirate, a chocolatier, a demon barber, and some of cinema’s most eccentric outsiders, but his filmography is surprisingly light on comic-book adaptations. Given Hollywood’s obsession with turning illustrated characters into blockbuster franchises, it’s an unusual gap in the career of one of the industry’s most recognizable stars. Even more surprising is that Depp’s sole comic-book movie arrived long before superhero cinema became the dominant force at the box office.

Of course, not every comic-book adaptation involves caped crusaders, superpowers, or world-ending battles. The medium has produced some decidedly darker stories, including graphic novels that explore historical crimes, social inequality, and humanity’s more disturbing impulses.

Released in 2001, From Hell is a Gothic thriller about Inspector Frederick Abberline’s investigation into the Jack the Ripper murders. It stands as Depp’s only comic book movie and is scheduled to leave free streaming soon.

From Hell Is Johnny Depp’s Only Comic Book Movie

From Hell stars Depp as Inspector Frederick Abberline, a Scotland Yard detective investigating the Whitechapel murders of 1888. Heather Graham plays Mary Kelly, a sex worker who becomes involved in the investigation, while Ian Holm portrays Sir William Gull, a respected physician. Robbie Coltrane and Ian Richardson also appear.

Directed by Albert and Allen Hughes, From Hell stands apart from Depp’s better-known fantasy roles. It draws on a sprawling historical crime story, blending murder mystery with Gothic horror and conspiracy. It was based (somewhat loosely) on Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s iconic graphic novel.

Moore and Campbell’s From Hell was serialized between 1989 and 1998 before being collected as a graphic novel. The work uses the Jack the Ripper murders to explore Victorian class divisions, misogyny, institutional power, and occult symbolism.

The film retains the central mystery but significantly simplifies the source material. While the graphic novel places Sir William Gull at the heart of its disturbing conspiracy, the adaptation makes Abberline the protagonist.

The movie also develops a romance between Abberline and Mary Kelly, providing an emotional thread that is less central to Moore and Campbell’s broader examination of Victorian society.

These changes make the From Hell film more conventional than its source. Moore’s graphic novel interrogates the social structures surrounding the murders, while the movie prioritizes suspense, character drama, and Gothic atmosphere. It remains an interesting adaptation, but readers expecting a faithful reproduction of the original may be disappointed.

From Hell Is An Underrated & Forgotten Thriller

Although From Hell doesn’t fully capture the graphic novel’s ambition, it works well as a dark period thriller. Its recreation of 1888 Whitechapel is particularly effective, with foggy streets, crowded pubs, and shadowy alleyways establishing an oppressive setting. Cinematographer Peter Deming’s imagery and Trevor Jones’ score reinforce a distinctly unsettling atmosphere that highlights the dingy, grubbiness of the era.

Depp brings an unusual quality to Abberline, whose drug use and visions complicate his detective work. Graham provides a compelling emotional anchor as Mary Kelly, while Holm makes Gull an intriguing presence whose respectable public image contrasts with the story’s sinister revelations.

The conspiracy-driven plot occasionally becomes overcomplicated, and From Hell takes liberties with historical figures and events. It certainly shouldn’t be mistaken for a factual reconstruction of the Ripper murders.

Still, From Hell is a solid watch for fans of Gothic cinema. Its combination of historical mystery, disturbing imagery, and supernatural suggestion gives it a distinct identity among early-2000s thrillers. It may not be a definitive adaptation, but it deserves a look from viewers interested in Depp’s more unconventional roles.

From Hell is scheduled to leave Tubi on November 1, 2026, giving US viewers a limited window to watch it free with ads. Its departure doesn’t necessarily mean the film will become unavailable elsewhere. Streaming rights vary by region, so viewers should check local services for subscription, rental, and purchase options before watching.
