25 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1925 season

We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals‘ regular season. Today, Wednesday, August 19, is 25 days away from the Arizona Cardinals’ regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 25 days until Week 1, let’s look back at the 1925 season for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals were NFL champions in 1925, although it came with some controversy. They went 11-2-1. They averaged 16.4 points per game, which was second in the league, and allowed 4.6, which ranked third. They had seven shutout wins.

When they lost to the Pottsville Maroons 21-7, dropping them to 9-2-1, it seemingly clinched the title for Pottsville, but the league commissioner suspended them and removed them from the league after they played an exhibition game in Philadelphia, which violated the territorial rights of the Frankford Yellow Jackets.

The Cardinals scheduled two more games and won, but they were sanctioned for having high school players playing under assumed names.

The Cardinals didn’t actually claim the championship until the Bidwill family purchased the team in 1933.

The league and the Pro Football Hall of Fame recognize the Cardinals as 1925 champions.

Paddy Driscoll was a first-team All-Pro that year.

Some believe that this “stolen” championship has cursed the Cardinals.
