24-hour power supply: Details of closed-door meeting between Power Minister, DisCos emerge

Details of a closed-door meeting between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies, DisCos, over the proposed 24/7 Energy Zones have emerged.

In a statement on Tuesday, Tegbe said the meeting was in furtherance of the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering reliable electricity to Nigerians.

According to him, the closed-door meeting was designed to deliver stable, 24-hour power supply to homes, businesses and industries in the country’s highest-demand areas, namely the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

He said the constraints in the sector were not limited to generation and transmission but also included how much power was taken up and delivered at the distribution end.

Tegbe stressed that the proposed Energy Zones were meant to close that gap, unlock commercial and industrial demand, and strengthen DisCos’ revenue and collections.

He also expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to building up infrastructure in high-demand areas to ensure that supply keeps pace with estimated demand in the growing economy.

In attendance were the leadership of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, Ikeja Electric, Eko Power Ltd., Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, and Sahara Energy Group.
