2027: It’s unfortunate NLC has been dragged to very lowest ebb — Akporeha

The immediate past president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, NUPENG, says a few individuals have dragged the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC to its lowest ebb ahead of the 2027 general election.

He disclosed this in a statement on Friday, reacting to a query by the NLC, signed by its spokesperson, Benson Upah, to the NLC Lagos State Council Chairperson, Agnes Sessi.

In a letter seen by DAILY POST, the NLC, under Joe Ajaero, had queried Sessi over her inauguration into the Working People United, WoPU association.

Reacting, Akporeha faulted the NLC leadership for double standards and for denying Sessi her fundamental human right to freedom of association.

According to Akporeha, who is the coordinator of WoPU, the NLC had abandoned its constitutional mandate of protecting workers’ welfare.

“They have now ignored their constitutional mandate of protecting workers’ welfare to dabble into politics.

“No law in the NLC constitution requires that a political support group must seek the approval of some persons in the hierarchy before it operates.

“It is unfortunate that some persons in the NLC are now arrogating powers they do not possess by directing individuals, unions and affiliates that their members should only join and support the Labour Party.

“To say the least, this is laughable and appalling that a few individuals are trying to drag our highly respected NLC to this very lowest ebb.”
