Japan U-17 women’s national team coach Sadayoshi Shirai has praised his players for their determination and fighting spirit despite their 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Little Nadeshiko fell to the Flamingos at Mohammed VI Football Complex Pitch 3 in Rabat on Saturday night, as Nigeria claimed their first-ever title in the competition.

Japan started the encounter brightly but struggled to contain the pace, physical strength and attacking threat of the Nigerian side, who gradually took control of the contest.

Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku put the Flamingos firmly in command before Japan mounted a late comeback through Fuki Ito, who pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining.

However, Nigeria held on to secure a historic victory and lifted the trophy for the first time.

Speaking after the match, Shirai acknowledged Nigeria’s strength but expressed pride in his players for their efforts throughout the encounter.

“First of all, I have to say that Nigeria were a very strong team. We understood their strengths, but there were moments when they managed to get in behind our defence.

“Even so, I think our players fought incredibly hard until the very end, doing everything they could to cope with Nigeria’s speed and physical power,” he told FIFA.
