2 Takeaways From Royce Lewis' Return to Minnesota Twins on Saturday

· · 2 min read

The Minnesota Twins recalled Royce Lewis from Triple-A on Saturday. Outfielder James Outman was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Lewis was initially sent to Triple-A after a difficult start to the season, but he performed well and earned the promotion on Saturday.

Here are two takeaways from Lewis’ first game back with the big league ball club.

Royce Lewis Facing Undeniable Reality

It is one thing to find success in the minor leagues. Lewis is finding out how different the talent level is at the MLB level once again, though.

While the infielder was able to draw a walk, he did go 0-3 at the plate. He struck out once and also made an error in the field.

Sure, we do not want to overreact to one game. With that being said, Lewis clearly still has work to do before he is back to where he was at in the past from a success standpoint. He is now hitting just .159/.260/.271 across 32 games played at the MLB level this season.

The Twins are not going to give up on Royce Lewis anytime soon, but he needs to get back on track.

Lewis’ New Role

Lewis has played third base in the past, but he spent time at second base and first base on Saturday. According to Aaron Gleeman, Saturday represented Lewis’ first appearance at first base.

It seems as if Lewis may be set to play in a utility role for now. Lewis could end up spending time at multiple positions. The Twins would like to keep his bat in the lineup, but they also have other players who need playing time.

In an ideal situation, Lewis will begin hitting at a consistent level once again and earn a full-time role. For now, Lewis will need to prove he can contribute on a more consistent basis.

What’s Next for Twins?

The Twins and Royals are currently playing in a four-game series. Kansas City leads the series 2-1 following Saturday’s contest. The series is being played in Minnesota, so the Twins would certainly love to avoid a series defeat.

The ball club will attempt to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon. Perhaps Royce Lewis will start once again and make an impact in the game.

First pitch for the Royals and Twins game in Minnesota is scheduled for 2:10 PM EST on Sunday afternoon.
