2. Bundesliga: Hertha BSC maintain perfect start with victory over Greuther Fürth
Mads Pedersen and Paul Seguin found the net in the second half to put the hosts in control, while Jannos Heuer’s late goal set up a nervy finish. However, Hertha held on to secure a 2-1 win and another three points and maintain their position at the top of the table.
Stefan Leitl’s side entered the fixture looking to resume their winning run following the international break. Having won all six of their opening league matches, the capital club were favourites against a Fürth side that had collected six points from their first six games.
Hertha made a positive start in front of their home supporters, with the hosts looking to dictate proceedings and extend their outstanding run of form. Fürth, meanwhile, sought to frustrate the league leaders and take advantage of any opportunities on the counterattack.
Oluwaseun Adewumi had the best chance of the half for the hosts after running in behind, yet the Fürth keeper Florian Hellstern produced a fine double save to thwart him in what was a good first half display by the young goalkeeper.
Despite Hertha’s early intentions, the visitors remained competitive, ensuring the contest was finely balanced heading into the second half.
Fürth thought they had broken the deadlock just after the hour mark through Omar Sillah, yet the goal was eventually ruled out due to an offside in the build up.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 65th minute when Mads Pedersen found the net to give Hertha a crucial advantage. The goal lifted the home side and put them in a strong position to continue their perfect start to the campaign.
Hertha then strengthened their grip on the contest in the 80th minute, with Paul Seguin doubling the lead and seemingly putting the result beyond doubt.
However, Fürth refused to give up and made the closing stages uncomfortable for the hosts when Jannos Heuer scored in the 90th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The late goal gave the visitors renewed hope of rescuing a point, but Hertha managed the remaining moments to preserve their advantage and secure another victory.
The result represents a seventh consecutive league win for Leitl’s side, further strengthening their position at the summit of the 2. Bundesliga. Their consistency in the opening weeks has established them as early contenders for promotion, although the season remains at an early stage.
For Fürth, the late response offered little consolation as they left Berlin empty-handed. They will now look to regroup and improve their results as they attempt to move away from the lower reaches of the table.
