10 Most Questionable Justice League Members Ever

· · 7 min read

The Justice League depends on trust as much as it depends on strength, since its members must work together when the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Still, the group has welcomed individuals whose behavior, loyalties, or past crimes have made their presence alongside its established heroes deeply controversial.

A powerful ability does not automatically make someone a reliable teammate, and a place on the League can carry responsibilities that some members struggle to meet. Whether they have frequently clashed with authority, compromised the team’s values, or simply proved too dangerous to keep close, these heroes have left plenty of reasons to question their inclusion.

Coldcast

Nathan Craig Jones, better known as Coldcast, is a metahuman who manipulates electromagnetic energy and related forces. He joined Manchester Black’s Elite, a super-powered group known for punishing criminals through brutal methods and disregarding legal limits. His powers made him especially dangerous during the Elite’s first major clash with Superman in Libya.

Superman’s decisive defeat of the Elite prompted Coldcast to reconsider his allegiance and abandon its violent philosophy. He joined the Justice League Elite, an offshoot assembled under Vera Black for covert operations. His earlier record, however, made his acceptance contentious, and his teammates had reason to question whether his judgment would hold under pressure.

Major Disaster

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/major-disaster-justice-league.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

Paul Booker adopted the name Major Disaster as a criminal adversary who repeatedly challenged Green Lantern, the Flash, and Superman. His early schemes relied on technology designed to trigger natural catastrophes, while his later abilities involved manipulating probability and causing disasters directly. That history made him a persistent threat, even after repeated defeats at the hands of established heroes.

After Superman offered him a chance at redemption, Major Disaster joined the replacement Justice League Batman assembled after the original team disappeared. He later served with the Justice League Elite, a covert unit tasked with secret operations for the wider League. His alcoholism then compromised his service, as a hungover Booker injured Hawkgirl and later contributed to Manitou Raven’s death.

Maxima

Maxima is the warrior queen of Almerac, an alien world whose royal lineage gave her formidable psionic abilities, superhuman strength, and flight. She arrived on Earth seeking Superman as an ideal mate, believing their genetic compatibility made him suitable. His rejection angered her and caused them to battle multiple times.

They somewhat reconciled, and she was invited to join the Justice League to fight beside Earth’s heroes. Although she joined the League, her desire to remain close to Superman complicated her new allegiance. That fixation resurfaced properly when she approached Superman again after his marriage to Lois Lane, then joined the Superman Revenge Squad.

7

Catwoman

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/catwoman-attacking-in-dc-comics.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Selina Kyle operates as Catwoman, Gotham City’s notorious cat burglar, relying on acrobatics, stealth, martial arts, and specialized equipment. Her criminal record has repeatedly placed her at odds with Batman, although their interests occasionally align against threats facing Gotham. She often acts according to personal priorities instead of maintaining a steady commitment to public service.

Steve Trevor recruited her for Amanda Waller’s government-backed Justice League of America in Justice League of America (2013). Trevor prized her familiarity with Batman and offered information about a woman who had stolen her identity as Catwoman. Her first assignment required her to infiltrate the Secret Society, but the operation went awry, and she was captured.

6

Harley Quinn

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Harley-Quinn-1-Cover-DC-Comics.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Harleen Quinzel began as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, where her fascination with the Joker drew her into his criminal orbit and out of her profession. Operating as Harley Quinn, she may lack conventional superpowers, but she possesses several abilities and talents that make her extremely dangerous in close combat.

After the events of Absolute Power, Harley joined the expanded Justice League Unlimited, which brought heroes from across the DC Universe into a coordinated force. Her place beside Superman, Batman, and others raised serious questions about the League’s judgment, as Harley’s history as the Joker’s accomplice and her reckless behaviour remained difficult to overlook.

5

Killer Frost

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Suicide-Squad-Killer-Frost-Justice-League.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

A former S.T.A.R. Labs scientist, Killer Frost gained her freezing abilities after H.I.V.E. agents attacked her in the Arctic. She can conjure ice, but survival also depends on absorbing heat from others, which can kill the people she drains. This could endanger allies as easily as adversaries, complicating the trust expected inside a team.

After helping Steve Trevor and Martin Stein rescue the Justice League, Snow attracted Batman’s attention. He recruited her for the rebuilt Justice League of America despite her criminal history as a former supervillain. That history paired with a willingness to use dangerous methods left serious questions about whether she could uphold the League’s ideals.

4

Black Adam

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/black-adam-ears-dc-comics.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Black Adam’s claim to justice rests on near-absolute power and his conviction that he alone can determine what Kahndaq needs from its ruler. Once chosen by the wizard Shazam, Teth-Adam gained immense strength, speed, invulnerability, and magic, but his rule became authoritarian as his ideals gave way to domination over Kahndaq.

Superman personally reached out to Kahndaq’s ruler, and Adam accepted an invitation to join the Justice League in Justice League . He served alongside Naomi McDuffie and Queen Hippolyta until Pariah’s Dark Army launched its devastating campaign. That battle apparently killed every League member except Adam, leaving him uncertain about whether heroism suited him.

3

Captain Cold

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/flash-rogues.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Captain Cold is the famous leader of the Rogues, Central City’s criminal crew, who relies on a sophisticated cold gun capable of freezing targets and suppressing the Flash’s speed. Despite his reputation as a calculating thief, he follows a personal code against killing innocents while remaining perfectly willing to steal from them whenever a score presents itself.

After the Crime Syndicate’s defeat, Lex Luthor recruited Snart for the Justice League’s new lineup, rewarding his role in resisting the invasion of Earth. His criminal instincts remained a poor fit for the superhero team, and his return to the Rogues showed how fragile that alliance proved over the years.

2

Lex Luthor

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/president-lex-luthor-sits-in-the-oval-office-in-dc-comics.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />
    </figure>

Few individuals have pursued Superman with Lex Luthor’s determination, using his genius, immense wealth, and LexCorp resources to challenge the Man of Steel. He has no innate superpowers, relying instead on advanced armor, scientific inventions, and political influence to compete with metahuman opponents. His long vendetta against Superman has repeatedly put personal ambition above public safety and trust.

After helping defeat the Crime Syndicate in Forever Evil, Luthor pushed for membership and embraced the attention that accompanied public heroism. Batman endorsed the arrangement in Justice League , reasoning that keeping Luthor close would help the League monitor his actions. Superman remained suspicious, while Luthor’s hunger for recognition made his new role as a defender difficult to trust.

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/superman-hates-lobo.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Lobo has historically earned his living as an intergalactic bounty hunter, taking contracts that often end in brutal violence. As the last surviving Czarnian, he possesses immense strength and remarkable regenerative abilities, but his disregard for life is not limited to professional targets. He even annihilated his own people, leaving a history of genocide behind his fearsome reputation.

Batman invited Lobo into the Justice League of America after the bounty hunter helped defeat Eclipso and Maxwell Lord in Justice League vs. Suicide Squad. Lobo offered Batman one free contract, and the Dark Knight used that promise to recruit him. His violent instincts and mercenary outlook made him a troubling ally for a team built around heroic restraint.
