10 Most Iconic Transformers Who Are Neither Decepticons Nor Autobots

· · 6 min read

The Transformers franchise is built around the long-running conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons, two factions whose battles have shaped the fate of Cybertron and countless worlds. The series, however, features several memorable characters who operate outside these familiar ranks, following their own agendas or belonging to entirely different groups, giving the conflict a much wider cast of compelling figures.

Some are mercenaries who change sides when it suits them, while others are ancient beings, independent warriors, or powerful entities with interests that extend far beyond either army. From enigmatic outsiders to legendary figures with immense influence, these Transformers have earned lasting recognition through their unique identities, motivations, and roles in the franchise’s expanding mythology.

Tarantulas

Tarantulas is one of the most treacherous figures in Beast Wars, serving among Megatron’s Predacons while pursuing schemes that rarely align with his commander’s plans. His spider alternate mode complements his scientific expertise, which he uses to manipulate technology, tamper with stasis pods, and conduct experiments that make even his fellow Predacons wary.

His apparent service to Megatron conceals a separate allegiance, since Tarantulas secretly works for the Tripredacus Council as an agent of the Predacon Secret Police. His shifting loyalties, uneasy partnership with Blackarachnia, and willingness to sabotage both sides make him a dangerous wildcard in a war already filled with betrayal.

Doubledealer

Doubledealer is a mercenary whose allegiance has never been as straightforward as the insignia he wears. In the original Generation 1 continuity, his robot form could pass for an Autobot, while his falcon form displayed Decepticon markings. This arrangement let him deceive both sides while exploiting their rivalry for his own financial benefit.

He has famously been paired with two partners, Knok and Skar, who enabled different configurations and reinforced his double identity. Knok unlocked the robot configuration that resembled an Autobot, while Skar enabled his Decepticon falcon mode. His weaponry included an intercontinental ballistic missile and a solid-light blaster intended for use in robot mode.

Sideways

Sideways is a mysterious Transformer introduced in the Armada animated series, arriving on Earth and claiming to be a wandering drifter with no fixed place among the warring armies. His motorcycle form and calm demeanour help him approach the Autobots without immediately raising suspicion, and he initially assists Hot Shot during a confrontation with Scavenger.

That cooperation proves calculated, as he switches the Mini-Con head he uses to display Autobot or Decepticon affiliation and gains access to both sides. He is ultimately revealed as an emissary of Unicron, manipulating the fighting and hatred to strengthen the planet-sized enemy threatening Cybertron and everyone who inhabits it.

7

Dinobot

Dinobot is a formidable raptor-form Transformer in Beast Wars, first introduced as a Predacon whose pride puts him at odds with Megatron. After his failed challenge to the Predacon leader, he seeks a place among the Maximals, although his warrior’s code and temperament make him a difficult ally for Optimus Primal’s team.

His alternate mode is a velociraptor, and his bladed tail and wrist-mounted energy discs make him a formidable close-range fighter on prehistoric Earth. Dinobot frequently clashes with Rattrap and questions the Maximals’ decisions, while his personal code of honour guides his decisions throughout one of Beast Wars‘ most memorable character arcs.

6

Lockdown

Lockdown is a ruthless bounty hunter whose work takes him across the Transformers universe without permanent loyalty to either army. In Transformers Animated, he accepts contracts from the Decepticons for valuable upgrades, pursuing targets for payment rather than devotion to Megatron’s cause. His habit of harvesting parts from captured opponents helps him upgrade his arsenal and display trophies from hunts.

He also appeared in the 2014 film Age of Extinction, hired by the Creators and looking down on the Autobot-Decepticon war. He was sent to Earth to retrieve Optimus Prime and temporarily collaborated with human agents pursuing the same goal. He is a fearless warrior with a willingness to hunt anyone as long as it’s for the right price.

5

Blackarachnia

Blackarachnia is a spider-form Predacon in Beast Wars, known for her sharp intelligence, self-preservation, and willingness to challenge Megatron’s authority. She began as a Maximal protoform, but the Predacons captured and reprogrammed her, leaving her with a new allegiance and little patience for anyone attempting to control her without consent.

Her spider form lets her restrain opponents with sticky webbing and deliver cyber-venom, while sharp instincts help her exploit weaknesses in stronger enemies. Her relationship with Silverbolt gradually softens her self-serving outlook during the later seasons, creating tension between her desire for freedom and her growing attachment to the Maximals.

4

Megatron (Beast Wars)

Megatron is the Predacon leader in Beast Wars, commanding a crew that pursues Energon on prehistoric Earth while opposing Optimus Primal’s Maximals. He differs from the original Megatron, however, adopting the name of the Decepticon leader while working towards a plan that could rewrite Cybertronian history and change the Great War’s outcome.

The series presents him as an ambitious, calculating commander, manipulating both allies and enemies alike. He often exploits their rivalries to keep the Predacons under his control, and his elaborate schemes constantly put his troops in danger whenever a chance for greater power appears. His theft of the Golden Disk eventually drives his attempt to alter the distant past.

3

Optimus Primal

Optimus Primal commands the Maximal crew of the Axalon in Beast Wars, where pursuit of a stolen Predacon vessel strands both sides on prehistoric Earth. Unlike Optimus Prime, whose name he shares, Primal is a separate character with a gorilla beast mode. He must guide his team through a conflict that quickly becomes a fight for survival.

His command is tested by constant crises, including alien weapons that threaten the planet and its inhabitants. He relies on sound judgment, steady leadership, and a willingness to put his crew’s safety ahead of his own. His gorilla form provides considerable physical strength, while his measured temperament helps keep the Maximals united despite their differing personalities.

2

Primus

Primus is the creator deity of the Transformers in several continuities, existing on a cosmic scale far removed from ordinary Cybertronian affairs and struggles. Rather than belonging to either army, he is associated with Cybertron itself, his essence forming the planet that becomes home to both Autobots and Decepticons across the franchise.

Some continuities depict him with a colossal robotic form, while others emphasize his identity as a dormant planetary being tied to the Matrix or Well of All Sparks. Across these portrayals, his significance lies in being the source of Transformer life and his place outside the ordinary rivalries that govern Cybertronian society.

Unicron

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/unicron-from-transformers-cartoon.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Unicron is the planet-consuming antagonist of Transformers, a colossal being whose appetite dwarfs the rivalries between Autobots and Decepticons across many continuities. His planetary form devours entire worlds, while his alternate humanoid body possesses immense strength and destructive weapons capable of threatening fleets and entire civilizations across the galaxy at once.

In comic-book mythology, he is often paired with Primus as a cosmic opposite, embodying chaos and destruction while Primus represents the creation of Cybertronian life. Unicron’s domineering nature extends to his followers, whom he controls through fear, bargains, and punishment whenever they question his authority or openly defy his commands.
