10 Deadliest Weapons in Transformers History

· · 6 min read

Across its many continuities, the Transformers franchise features an extensive and varied arsenal of weaponry shaped by the conflicts between its two major warring factions. These weapons serve purposes ranging from strengthening individual warriors in battle to threatening entire civilizations, while some carry historical significance through their origins and connections to Cybertronian history.

Their reputations across the series’ many interpretations are shaped not only by destructive force, but also by the circumstances surrounding their creation, ownership, and use in battle. Some are tied to ancient Transformers lore, while others emerge from later technological advancements and the demands of continuing warfare across competing forces.

The Underbase

The Underbase is an immense repository containing the accumulated knowledge of the entire Cybertronian race, preserved as patterns of light within Marvel’s Generation One continuity. Its contents also possess considerable destructive power, and as a result, long before the main events, Optimus Prime sent it into space to deny Megatron access to its dangerous capabilities.

That threat, however, resurfaced millions of years later when the Underbase approached Earth, drawing rival Decepticon groups into a race to secure it. Starscream secretly pursued the archive for himself, absorbing part of its power and massacring most of the unbonded Autobots and Decepticons before its full force ultimately obliterated him.

Megatron’s Fusion Cannon

Among Megatron’s most recognizable pieces of equipment is the Fusion Cannon, a powerful arm-mounted weapon that has accompanied the Decepticon leader across numerous Transformers continuities. In Generation One, its technical profile describes a particle-beam system capable of converting small quantities of matter into enormous amounts of explosive nuclear energy to power its attacks.

The weapon can discharge energy across distances reaching twelve miles, with enough force to level a small town in a single blast. His specifications also describe an interdimensional link to a black hole, allowing the cannon to draw antimatter at considerable cost to Megatron’s own systems during even one discharge.

8

The Spark Extractor

The Spark Extractor is a fearsome Decepticon weapon featured in Transformers Prime, designed to remove a Cybertronian’s spark from its mechanical body. It can attack every Transformer within its operational radius simultaneously, draining the life force that sustains them and leaving their mechanical bodies lifeless within moments, without even requiring direct contact.

After the Autobots recovered it, Smokescreen carried the relic into their battle for the Omega Lock on Cybertron. He dropped it among Megatron’s Vehicons before phasing away, killing the surrounding troops and forcing Megatron to destroy the weapon with his Dark Star Saber to prevent its field from reaching him.

7

The Cybonic Plague

The Cybonic Plague is a Decepticon-engineered virus from Transformers Prime, developed under Megatron’s biological warfare program and responsible for millions of Cybertronian deaths during the war. Spread through contact with infected Energon, it gradually contaminates a Cybertronian’s fuel supply and can cause fatal system failure if a cure is not administered.

Its danger resurfaced when Optimus Prime contracted the dormant infection while investigating a centuries-old Autobot vessel that had crashed on Earth. With Ratchet unable to find a remedy, Bumblebee infiltrated Megatron’s subconscious through a Cortical Psychic Patch and recovered the formula from the Decepticon leader’s memories before Optimus’s condition became irreversible.

6

The Staff of Merlin

The Staff of Merlin is an ancient Cybertronian artifact that originated with Quintessa, who intended to use its power to restore her homeworld. Its ability to drain Unicron’s life energy made it central to her plan for restoring Cybertron, placing Earth in danger once its identity as Unicron became known.

After Quintessa brainwashed Optimus Prime, she ordered him to recover the artifact and bring it to Cybertron, where its power could extract Earth’s life energy. Megatron eventually seized the staff and delivered it to her, allowing the process to begin through the Knights’ submerged ship while the Autobots fought to stop her.

5

The Requiem Blaster

The Requiem Blaster is one of the formidable Mini-Con weapons in Transformers Armada, assembled from three members of the Space Mini-Con Team. Astroscope, Payload, and Sky Blast combine to form its cannon configuration, with Astroscope’s transdimensional research enabling it to draw energy from cosmic phenomena, including supernovas, quasars, and black holes.

Sky Blast summoned Astroscope and Payload with a song, awakening the trio’s combined form as the Autobots struggled against Tidal Wave. Optimus Prime then wielded the completed weapon, using its immense output to drive the Decepticon giant back and protect his allies during the desperate coastal battle for the Autobots’ survival.

4

The Star Saber

The Star Saber is another powerful Mini-Con weapon featured in Transformers Armada, formed when Jetstorm, Runway, and Sonar combine their bodies into a single sword. Its power enhances whoever wields it with immense strength and destructive energy, making its three components coveted prizes throughout the war between the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth.

The sword’s reputation predates the modern conflict, as an ancient civilization collapsed after its people fought over possession of the assembled weapon. On Earth, Hot Shot became its first prominent wielder, using its enhanced power to overwhelm Decepticon opponents before the weapon passed into enemy hands through Sideways’s calculated betrayal.

3

The Hydra Cannon

Also in the Armada continuity, the Hydra Cannon is a colossal Mini-Con superweapon developed by the Decepticons during their campaign to leave Earth. Its firing system combines the Star Saber, Skyboom Shield, and Requiem Blaster, three legendary weapons formed by nine individual Mini-Cons, channeling their collective energy through one devastating discharge.

The Decepticons installed the weapon aboard a lunar warship, constructed by enslaved Mini-Cons under Megatron’s command and intended to transport his forces toward Cybertron after their time on Earth. During its first test, the cannon obliterated an approaching comet in seconds, prompting Megatron to order Starscream to target the Autobot base.

2

The Planet Buster

The Planet Buster is a moon-sized heat-ray cannon deployed by the Vok in Beast Wars, concealed within Earth’s second moon until the aliens judged their experiment compromised. Designed to ignite the Energon deposits scattered beneath the surface, its beam would trigger a chain reaction capable of tearing the entire planet apart.

The Vok channelled power from an alien installation on Earth, and the firing beam began disturbing the orbiting stasis pods as it charged. Optimus Primal commandeered a modified stasis pod, rigged its transwarp cell with explosives, and piloted it into the Planet Buster’s core, sacrificing himself when Megatron’s sabotage prevented his escape.

1

The Star Harvester

The Star Harvester is an enormous machine featured in Revenge of the Fallen. It was built by the original Primes to convert a star’s energy into Energon for the AllSpark and their people. Its use was forbidden near inhabited worlds, since draining their suns would also endanger every civilization dependent upon those solar systems and nearby planets.

After the machine was constructed beneath ancient Egypt, the Fallen attempted to violate the Primes’ agreement by activating it to harvest Earth’s sun. His six fellow Primes confronted him, reclaimed the Matrix of Leadership, and sacrificed themselves to hide it inside a tomb built from their own bodies for millennia.
